Aboriginal Nursing

 

2010 TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund 

Deadline for submission: March 31, 2010.

 

The TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund will support First Nation Status or Non-status, Inuit or Métis* nurses at the Bachelor, Master’s, PhD and Nurse Practitioner levels. This fund aims to support Canadian Aboriginal nursing students who intend to practice nursing preferably in Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal health settings or any health settings.

 

*First Nation Status, Non-status, Inuit or Métis ancestry can be demonstrated in any of the following ways:

  • Status card for First Nations applicants
  • Band/Treaty card
  • Letter from band chief or mayor, or band office for First Nations applicants
  • Métis membership card, OR recognizable proof of connection to parent(s) or grand-parent(s) with a Métis membership card, through a long-form birth certificate or baptism certificate demonstrating that relationship (photocopies are acceptable).
  • Inuit beneficiary card
  • Students who are non-status First Nation must send a photocopy of the band card issued to parents or grandparents along with a long-form birth certificate or baptism certificate clearly demonstrating their relationship to the individual listed on the band card.

 

Baccalaureate level

 

Eligibility criteria at the Baccalaureate level

 

Applicants must:

  • Be of First Nation Status or Non-status, Inuit or Métis*
  • Have or be eligible for Canadian citizenship
  • Be studying in Canada at a Canadian University or College, enrolled in a 2nd year (or beyond) Bachelor degree
  • Be able to produce a transcript of grades from a post-secondary educational institution (in nursing or another discipline).

2. Please have three academic or work referees complete the Appendix "B": Referee appraisal at the baccalaureate level. The Referees must complete it on computer, print it out for their signature and give it to you in a sealed/signed envelope.

3. Before sending your application, please read and review very carefully the Checklist as it includes a list of supporting documents you must provide with your application.

 

 

Masters level

 

Eligibility criteria at the Master's level

  

 Applicants must:

  • Be of First Nation Status or Non-status, Inuit or Métis*
  • Have or be eligible for Canadian citizenship
  • Be studying in Canada at a Canadian University or College, enrolled in a Masters degree.
  • Be able to produce a transcript of grades from their last level of study
  • Be RNs enrolled in a Master of Nursing Program or in a nursing program which will qualify them to become RNs at the Master’s level.

2. Please have three academic or work referees complete the Appendix "B": Referee appraisal at the master's level. The Referees must complete in on computer, print it out for signature and give it to you in a sealed/signed envelope.

Doctoral level

 

Eligibility criteria at the PhD level

 

 Applicants must:

  • Be of First Nation Status or Non-status, Inuit or Métis*
  • Have or be eligible for Canadian citizenship
  • Be studying in Canada at a Canadian University or College, enrolled in a PhD degree.
  • Be able to produce a transcript of grades from their last level of study
  • Be normally enrolled in Nursing PhD or a health related field if this will impact advancing in nursing.
  • Please note that RNs doing thesis work are also eligible.

Nurse Practitioner level

 

Eligibility criteria for nurse practitioners

 

Applicants must:
  • Be of First Nation Status or Non-status, Inuit or Métis*
  • Have or be eligible for Canadian citizenship
  • Be studying in Canada at a Canadian University or College, enrolled in a Nurse Practitioner degree.
  • Applicants must be able to produce a transcript of grades from their last level of study

Reporting obligations for successful candidates 2009-2010

  1. You need to submit by the end of November 2009:

    1. Progress Report

    2. Guidelines to completing the Progress Report
      Proof of registration and acceptance to the second term.
       

  2. You need to submit by the end of April 2010:

    1. Final Report

    2. Guidelines to completing the Final Report
      Final transcript.
