TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund Award – Baccalaureate

Being born at 1lb, 14oz meant that I would deal with a lot of medical issues in my early life. I was in and out of the hospital numerous times when I was a kid. During that time, I received life changing care, and at an early age I had much respect for the health care workers.

As I grew up and became a teenager, my father became ill and his chronic kidney disease finally took out his last working kidney. This meant that he had to be on dialysis. When he was on dialysis at home, I was the one to take care of him; it was at this time when I knew my goal was to become a nurse.

A nurse is with the patient at all hours of the day, caring for them in every facet. Giving back for the care I received when I was younger; caring for my father; and enjoying being there for people in their time of greatest need is what drives me to become a nurse.
