Jennifer Woo

Beverley & John Carl Scholarship

I am entering my second year of the Family Nurse Practitioner program at the University of British Columbia. My nursing background has mostly been in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside. I’ve worked on a HIV hospital ward, HIV primary care clinic, emergency department, the first and only addictions clinic in North America to provide prescription heroin and injectable hydromorphone, and a UBC research study aiming to support women healing from experiences of violence by incorporating traditional indigenous teachings. My prior studies in history and political science sparked a drive to learn more from the communities around me and work together for greater equity and wellness.

I volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross and am a member of the Canadian Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (CANAC). I have the fortune of doing work that aligns with my passions for advocacy and social justice. Every day, I am supported and inspired by compassionate and resilient patients and colleagues.

After graduation, I hope to work in primary health care in remote and urban settings. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work in a profession that is meaningful, radical, challenging, heartwarming, and profound.
