Award Recipient

Katherine Wyne

Nightingale Award

I am currently a second year BSN student at College of the Rockies.  I grew up in Langley, BC and moved to Victoria right out of high school.  At the University of Victoria I studied Biology and Psychology and became fascinated with the physiology of the brain and body.  Although I was passionate about that, I felt as if something was missing.  I dipped my toes in general studies and started working with a young girl with total care needs.  She inspired me to keep my passion for science, but also understand the beauty in assisting someone to live his or her most optimal life.  This is when I knew I must apply for nursing.

I completed the Practical Nursing diploma and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse on a surgical and complex wound unit in Victoria, BC.  I absolutely fell in love with nursing.  I then received a seat for the BSN program at COTR.  This decision to move across the province to pursue higher education was a tough one, but I am so happy that was the decision I made.  I’m enjoying the beautiful mountains, the many friends I’ve made in this program, and all of the learning opportunities I have been fortunate to get through a rural nursing lens.  I am so thankful to be a recipient of the Nightingale Award from the Canadian Nurses Foundation.  This award allows me to continue to pursue my nursing degree with less financial stress and for that I am truly grateful.
