Maridith Brown

CNSA Community Award

I am becoming a nurse because I have a passion to help others gain and maintain health, especially at vulnerable times in life.  I completed a Co-op placement in the ICU this past summer and fell in love with the fast pace and advanced scope of the nurses on a unit like this.  I already know I want to continue my education post-undergrad, and intensive care is a great place to do so!   Another area of practice I enjoy is mental health care.

It’s important that I give back to my communities because they have given me so much opportunity to grow and become a strong, healthy and helpful individual.  One of my favourite volunteer positions is with the Canadian Nursing Students Association.  This position allows me to network, connect, and speak up for my colleagues as well as be involved in the political side of health care. Through CNSA I have travelled across the country giving my fellow students a voice. Another volunteer position I take great pride in is my involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters. This volunteer opportunity spoke to me because I am interested in making a long term impact on someone who needs guidance and one-on-one time.

I work as a safe drive home driver for The Students Union and as a notetaker and tutor. I also spend weekends caregiving in the community. Caring for people in their homes is special work and I’m honoured to have provided company, care and companionship for seniors in the community.
