Nicole Ong

Eaton Award

I am a Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at UBC. Prior to the programme, I was a post-doctoral research fellow at the School of Kinesiology in UBC, and a sessional lecturer at UBC and Douglas College. In my research I studied observational practice and psychological variables that maximize motor skill learning. Working on my dissertation, the hours I spent writing in isolation helped me realize that I needed more human interaction in my work. I wanted to make tangible, positive differences in people’s lives. Ultimately, my goal is to combine my passion for education and research in my nursing career. Friends, family, and colleagues of mine have expressed regret at my switch to nursing and starting over, having spent a decade establishing my expertise in the field of motor learning. Yet, while caring for my patients, I am ever more convinced I made the right career move. I am proud that I mustered the strength and tenacity to reinvent myself and be true to my core values. I would soon be in a better position to contribute to health care and improving the quality of lives of British Columbians. Thank you for supporting nursing education!
