CNF Lindabury Bursary
My name is Leandra McLeod, and I am from Grandmother’s Bay and La Ronge. I am entering my final year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program through the University of Saskatchewan and Northlands College.
Over the past year, I’ve been attending clinical placements outside my hometown, traveling every week for six months to gain hands-on experience, build my skills, and deepen my knowledge in the nursing field. While this has been a valuable learning opportunity, it has also been one of the most challenging years of my life. I’ve experienced significant personal loss and faced difficult life circumstances. Through it all, I’ve come to recognize the importance of taking care of my mental health and allowing myself the space to recover and grow.
Throughout my studies, my family has been a constant source of encouragement and support. That’s why I’m especially grateful to share that my next clinical placement will be in my hometown—close to family, friends, familiar surroundings, accessible transportation, and the comfort of my own home. I truly thrive when I’m in my community, and I’m looking forward to continuing my learning journey here this fall.
My career goals include working as a public health nurse (which may also involve mental health work) and/or as an acute care nurse in a local hospital or clinic. I have a deep respect for the healthcare centers in our region and feel strongly about being a voice and advocate for Indigenous peoples in the healthcare system—because I know what it feels like to be on the other side of care.
During one of my clinical placements in my hometown, I discovered a strong interest in mental health nursing. I noticed a significant demand for mental health support and services, and I was drawn to the idea of being part of that care. I hope to contribute by offering resources, guidance, and compassionate care to the northern tri-communities I call home. This is the reason I have pursued studies in the nursing profession.
