Extendicare Nurse Practitioner Award in Gerontology
Why I became a nurse: As the first of my family to become a nurse, I often ask myself that very question. For me, I believe it was about making good use of my skills in a way that can benefit others. I considered other professions or trades, but knew these would not replace the personal aspect of nursing, working closely with the clients you help. Aiding people, especially at a time when they need it most regarding their health is just a feeling difficult to describe. Specifically, I take pride in caring for our older population as I find the individual life journeys fascinating and their wisdom invaluable, an added benefit of working closely with them.
Healthcare is a difficult sector to work within and takes individuals who are caring, resilient, empathetic and strong to name a few traits. It is an ever-changing challenge and you are always learning. It is this challenge that I think gives pride to the title of nurse and you can tell those outside the profession respect it when you state what your job title is. I knew I wanted to occupy my life’s work with something that I could be proud to tell my friends and family I am a part of and nursing has fulfilled that desire.
