Frances Moran Award
I am honoured to be a recipient of the Frances Moran Award from the Canadian Nurses Foundation. As a proud member of L’sitkuk First Nation in Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia), I now call home the vibrant community near Elsipogtog First Nation in Mi’kma’ki (New Brunswick), where I live with my husband and children.
I hold a master’s degree in public health and am currently pursuing a doctor of public health degree at the University of Toronto. Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving in senior leadership and administrative roles, guided by a commitment to improving health systems and addressing the complex challenges facing First Nation communities.
The decision to become a nurse was rooted in my dedication to supporting First Nation communities and fostering culturally safe, compassionate care. Growing up, I witnessed the lasting impacts of colonial trauma and stereotypes on our people. This inspired me to advocate for health care that not only breaks these cycles but also uplifts and celebrates the voices, strengths, and traditions of First Nation people.
As a nurse, I am committed to driving positive change by promoting a health system that respects Indigenous views and needs. I believe progress comes from empathy, collaboration, and openness to new ideas. I am eager to continue this work with renewed dedication, using my voice and leadership to support healthier futures for First Nation communities and inspire future health care change agents.
