Since I was a child, I’ve been drawn to healthcare because of the values it represents, specifically compassion, dedication, and helping others in their most vulnerable moments. My path to nursing became clear while working as a Research Coordinator at a public health centre led by Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses. We supported pregnant women and mothers with young children who had experienced domestic violence and/or substance use. Watching the nurses build trust and provide compassionate care inspired me to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the accelerated program at the University of British Columbia.
Alongside my studies, I work as a Research Assistant focused on youth mental health promotion through policy engagement, but my clinical passion lies in cardiac care. As a South Asian, I’m especially motivated to work in this specialty because South Asians are at higher risk for coronary heart disease, often at younger ages and with fewer symptoms. I want to be able to provide culturally sensitive care, raise awareness, and implement prevention efforts within high-risk communities.
For me, working with marginalized communities fuels my passion for advocacy and patient education. Whether at the bedside or in research, nursing allows me to make efforts towards improving health outcomes, which is why I became a nurse.
