I have always wanted to be a nurse because I’ve always felt a desire toward helping people. I’ve known for a long time that I wanted a career where I could make a real difference in someone’s life, especially during their most vulnerable moments. Nursing felt like the right path not just because of the hands-on care, but because it allows you to be present, to advocate, and to connect with people in a meaningful way.
Another reason I chose nursing is because of the endless opportunities it offers. There are so many different areas you can get into, and the career can grow and change with you. That kind of flexibility really appealed to me, along with the fact that it offers a level of financial stability that’s important to me and my future.
But maybe most importantly, as an African Nova Scotian, I haven’t seen many nurses who look like me. Representation in healthcare matters. It means a lot to be in a position where I can support others while also standing as someone younger generations can see themselves in. Being able to care for others while also representing my community is something I’m incredibly proud of.
Sincerely,
Amaya
