Award Recipient

Chentel Cunningham

Dorothy Kergin Award

I chose nursing for two reasons. One, was my exposure to the nursing discipline as I was raised in a family of several of nurses; and second, was my natural passion for children’s health. Because of these two aspects, I knew I could make a difference in many families lives by becoming a nurse. I have been a Registered Nurse since 2002 and a Nurse Practitioner at the Stollery Children’s Hospital since 2012. I have continued to dedicate my nursing career to helping children and their families who are plagued with children’s heart failure.

As this year’s recipient of the Dorothy Kergin Award, the Canadian Nurses Foundation has recognized the importance of my research and supported me in continuing my scholarly endeavours. My research focus is to develop an evidenced-based tool that will better translate research knowledge specifically for parents who have a child with heart failure. It will fill a significant knowledge gap and empower parents to make better decision for their child’s health which can in turn improve their children’s health outcome. It makes me proud to know that I am able to help families in their complex health journeys, both through the avenues of clinical practice and research.

I will be forever grateful for this scholarly opportunity and am delighted to receive such a prestigious funding award. I would like to express my heartfelt thank you to CNF and their generous donors for this substantial contribution in my studies.
