Adrienne Lagura

Tylenol Masters Award

I am extremely grateful and honored to receive the CNF Tylenol Scholarship!

My passion for nursing stems from my childhood. I used to spend my summer breaks with my aunt who was in nursing school back then. She had always been very driven to help the people around her–I told myself that when I grow up, I want to be just like her.

When my family moved to Canada, it was initially not easy navigating to a new environment and culture. Despite the challenges that immigrants like myself usually face, I persevered and finished my BSN degree. I also continued to volunteer with various organizations. In 2016, I worked with a community in The Dominican Republic. This experience served as an eye-opener to realize the importance of effective primary prevention and having a primary care provider who helps advocate for healthcare. As a registered nurse, I was also given an opportunity to work with nurse practitioners. I was inspired by their leadership, empathy, holism, and by their compassion to work with patients in addressing their health concerns. These experiences clarified for me what my life’s vocation would be.

I understand that continuing my graduate studies will equip me with the tools to help me reach my goals in becoming an effective health advocate. Therefore, I pursued my graduate studies in the Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Victoria. I believe that my previous experiences, passion for helping others, and my drive for lifelong learning will continue to motivate me in advocating for equitable healthcare.
