Award Recipient

Lily Yeung

Yvonne Andrews Award

I am entering my fourth year of nursing at Ryerson University. During my final year of my previous degree in Integrative Biology, I consolidated my knowledge from different areas of biology and realized that many diseases result from a breach in the body’s natural defense. This realization prompted my search for a career in health promotion. During this search, I was intrigued by the diversity and versatility of nursing roles, especially the primary health care nurse practitioner (PHCNP) role. I then entered into Ryerson’s BScN program in hope of one day pursuing graduate studies and an NP certification.

I found my third year of nursing particularly fulfilling. I gained first-hand experience working with marginalized populations including families with low income, lone parent, and people with disabilities. This experience further motivates me to pursue a career as a PHCNP. In the same year, I got involved in community based research as a peer research associate in the Culture, Identities, and Voices Study. I learned about the acculturation experiences of Asian young women and the impact these experiences have on their sexual and emotional health. This topic is underemphasized in sexuality research and thus creates a gap in healthcare provision to this minority group. By studying these lived experiences, I hope to contribute to evidence informed practice that is culturally sensitive.

I am very thankful for CNF and its sponsors for the Yvonne Andrews Award. Their support will help prepare me for the exciting adventure that lies ahead.
