Katie Chapman

CNF Award

Currently, I am a 4th year nursing student at the University of British Columbia. As I enter the profession of nursing, I feel grateful for the nurses that inspire me each day through their dedication, advocacy, compassion, and commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. As a nursing student, I feel honoured to be afforded the privilege of supporting individuals, families, and communities through journeys of healing, transition, loss, and recovery. This award contributes to my ongoing learning and ability to make a difference in the lives of patients and families. Specifically, I aspire to become a public health nurse and lactation consultant working with mothers, infants, and families as they transition into parenthood. Becoming a parent is a special life journey that requires a stable and consistent support system, knowledge, skills, and lifestyle modifications that can be stressful. It is my intention to help ease the transition to parenthood by providing unique and individualized support, teaching, and care in hospital, at home, and in the community. This includes particular attention to individuals and families that may need extra support during pregnancy and parenthood such as women with mental health illnesses, low-income families, single mothers, and those requiring specific cultural considerations such as immigrant and First Nations families. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn and grow and bring my gifts of nursing to the world.

This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses.
