Shivinder Dillon

RBC Diversity in Nursing Fund Award

I am entering my last year of the Bachelor of Science program in Nursing at The University of British Columbia. I have always been passionate about serving marginalized and immigrant populations and my nursing education is allowing me to fulfill that passion along with opening a whole new world of possibilities. So far, I have completed my medical/surgical, paediatric and maternity rotations and have enjoyed every moment of them. Along with learning the necessary clinical skills required to become a registered nurse, nursing has taught me a lot about myself by challenging and inspiring me.

Being passionate about women’s health, I continue to volunteer with the Positive Women’s Network, a non-profit organization providing support and health services to women living with HIV in British Columbia, although the accelerated nursing program at UBC does not allow much free time. Being awarded the Canadian Nurses Foundation, RBC Diversity in Nursing Scholarship is a great honour. It will also ease my financial burden and allow me to continue to provide safe, competent care to my clients and volunteer for the causes that I believe in.

In the future, I plan to further my education by pursuing a Master’s degree in Nursing and potentially a PhD. I am also considering the Nurse Practitioner program. However, regardless of the academic credentials I obtain, I have a personal goal to better the lives of women, children and youth, especially those from marginalized and immigrant populations.

This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses.
