Award Recipient

Amanda Kioke

TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund Award – Baccalaureate

I am a second year nursing student at Laurentian University. I am truly honored to have been selected as a recipient for an award this year from the Canadian Nurses Foundation and TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund.

I am originally from Attawapiskat First Nation and I have spent the past six years reconnecting with my extended family and community. It was through this experience that I came to realize that becoming an RN would allow me engage in my passion for helping others and create positive change ‘on the ground’.

My interests lie with rural and remote health, health promotion and education, and women’s health. As an Indigenous student, I hope to support the development and integration of Indigenous health and ecological knowledge into nursing practice. In the future, I hope to also be able to facilitate nursing and health-related research in communities and populations that are under studied.

This past year has been both challenging and rewarding in so many ways. I look forward to what this journey will bring in the next year of my BScN education. The support of this generous award will be instrumental in helping me achieve my academic goals and professional aspirations. Kitchi meegwetch to the CNF and to TD for this incredible gift and opportunity!
