Danielle Aitkens

TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund Award – Master’s

I am from Lethbridge and I enjoy spending time in the beautiful outdoors- visiting the Rocky Mountains to go hiking, kayaking and sightseeing, usually bringing my camera along.

I became a nurse because I am passionate about people, and caring for them. I have a heart to see people healed, and comforted through pain and the challenging process of disease & loss. I didn’t know what kind of career I was getting myself into initially, as I am the only person in my family working in a health care career. Joining the wonderful profession of nursing has sparked a flame inside me, and ignited new passions and goals for myself. I am always up for a challenge, and nursing provides many opportunities for growth both personally and professionally.

I have found my passion in Pediatric nursing- having worked Pediatric ICU for a couple years, and general Pediatrics and NICU as well. I now work as a nursing educator both on Pediatrics and in the Simulation Health Center at the University of Lethbridge. I have discovered a new love for teaching- and supporting students in their own journeys towards becoming Registered Nurses. Working as a Simulation Nursing instructor allows me to have fun with both nursing and creativity, and impact R.N. students in a positive way. I am so thankful for nursing- and look forward to the adventures ahead as I continue my Master’s studies this next year.

We know that helping nurses and nursing students is a team effort. More qualified nurses, more nurse-led research, more nurses and nursing students supported with mentoring and proactive mental health programs and training – that’s the outcome of your support. This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses. Let’s make this year’s Giving Tuesday our most impactful yet, proving that our collective kindness can create lasting change.
