Darian Brown

TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund Award – Baccalaureate

I am a fourth year nursing student at the University of New Brunswick Fredericton campus. My aspiration to become a nurse came from various life experiences. When I was a child, my grandfather had multiple health problems and toward the end of his journey, he became ill with renal failure. I sat at his bedside and watched the nurses care for him. I wanted to care for him the way they did, so I followed behind them doing what I could. I remember him experiencing a lot of pain in that moment, and to be helpful I gently put my grandfather’s socks on him. Though it was a small act, my grandfather told me that I would make a fantastic nurse with the care I gave. It was not until years passed that I saw the value in his words.

Later on, when I was in grade seven, my mom was a mature student in nursing school. Following her, my sister went on to become a nurse. I took great interest in what they studied and found such value in the how they treasured the profession they were a part of. I truly feel that the life experiences I had led me to pursue nursing as a career. Overall, I want to dedicate my life to helping others in their time of need. Nursing provides me with an opportunity to do this like no other.
