Lacey Kirkness

CINA/CNF Indigenous Award

My name is Lacey Kirkness and I am a proud Indigenous Woman from Northern Manitoba. I am currently heading into my fourth and final year of Nursing at the University of Manitoba- University College of the North Cohort in my hometown of The Pas. I grew up with wonderful role models in the nursing profession as my mother and my sister are both nurses. Becoming a nurse has been an interest of mine since I was a teenager. While I was growing up, my Granny had cancer and unfortunately never always had the best care. One main thing I noticed with the healthcare system was that it was not equal for everyone, especially for Indigenous people. This motivated me to pursue nursing, as I knew we needed more Indigenous representation in the healthcare field and more advocates for all minority groups. I am excited to work in my home community where I can be an advocate for the local Indigenous community and ensure that they are receiving the healthcare that they deserve. Becoming a nurse is no easy feat, but I am happy that I can help make a difference in my community while also truly loving my profession.
