Karen Livingston

ARNM Centennial Legacy Award

I’m a masters of nursing student at the University of Manitoba.

I have always wanted to have a career in healthcare, even as a child I always chose the healthcare option in the board game of Life, envisioning a career that involved supporting and helping others. This desire was further solidified when my grandfather fell ill and visitation for children was restricted.

I graduated from nursing school with my RN diploma, then while working obtained my BN degree. Initially my plan was to be an operating room nurse for my entire career, but changes in the healthcare system structure propelled me to forge a new path in nursing.

I have worn many hats in my profession, transitioning from direct patient care to taking on roles as a clinical resource nurse, educator, and now a nursing leader. These diverse experiences have allowed me to grow professionally, exposed me to multiple clinical areas, that have profoundly shaped me as a nurse. Working alongside patients, families, and fellow healthcare staff has been incredibly fulfilling, and it has given me the opportunity to guide, mentor, support, and empower other nurses as they navigate their own career paths.

I am grateful for the Canadian Nurses Foundation for supporting my graduate studies and the opportunity to enhance my knowledge and skills. It is a privilege to be a nurse, I aspire to be an agent of positive change in the nursing profession, driving innovation, advocating for patients and nurses, and contributing to the advancement of healthcare.
