Karen Graham Northern Nursing Award
I am 34 years old and began nursing school after a decade of preparation to ensure minimal negative impact on my family. I have type 1 diabetes, as does my son, and over the years I have spent a lot of my energy educating the people around us about the condition. When I was hospitalized in 2018, the Internist and main RN providing my care commented on my knowledge and asked if I’d considered a career in diabetes education. I told them that I planned to go to nursing school so that I could eventually work in the Diabetes Education Program in Yellowknife, NT. They both encouraged me, and it was their words that contributed to my decision to apply. Though I hold a keen interest in diabetes education, I hope to gain acute care experience working in Obstetrics upon graduation until I am able to certify as a Diabetes Educator. As a 3rd generation nurse I look forward to joining the profession and providing quality care to everyone I encounter.
