TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund Award – Baccalaureate
I grew up on Vancouver Island but have lived the last 15 years in the beautiful Okanagan with my two children. A single mother and school secretary for many years, I have just recently remarried and am entering year three of the four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program at the Kelowna campus of the University of British Columbia. I have also begun coursework to earn a Critical Care and Emergency Nursing Specialty certificate through BCIT.
My father was a paramedic with the BC Ambulance Service for over 20 years and he went on to teach occupational first aid for another ten years after that. I grew up with a police radio scanner alerting our family to every emergency in our community. Even when not on duty, if no one else was immediately available, my father would respond with his oversized personal first aid kit and bring me along to assist him or direct traffic if needed. When my father was working, or later teaching, my brother and I were left at home to care for our mother who was chronically ill. These experiences, as well as a natural concern for the health and wellbeing of others, led to my desire to pursue a career in healthcare.
Thank you so much for your support. I look forward to adding my hands and heart to your good work!!
