Sharon Nield Memorial Award

I am excited to pursue my dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse. My inspiration to become a nurse arose from a childhood experience.  At 12 years old, I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma on my right ankle.  This led to countless trips to B.C children’s hospital.  On the day of my operation, I felt extremely scared while lying on the surgical table.  Standing beside me was a compassionate nurse who comforted me and helped me feel safe right before receiving anesthetics.  This was my fondest memory in the hospital, and it inspired me to become a future pediatric nurse.  I truly love working with children and I hope I can make them feel as safe, secure and hopeful as I felt in the operating room.

This summer, I worked on the Human Rights and Equity Committee at the B.C Nurses union. My role was to support our four equity caucuses which include the LGBTQ Caucus, Aboriginal Leadership Circle, Mosaic of Colour, and Nurses with Disabilities.  I also had the exciting opportunity to facilitate a communication course for internationals nurses and help them practice essentials skills needed in interprofessional collaboration. After graduation, I hope to continue to support these marginalized groups!

I am deeply grateful for receiving this scholarship! I would like to thank the donors and the Canadian Nursing Foundation for supporting me in my education and my future!
