Antonio Hakko

CeraVe Skincare Scholarships for Diversity and Equity

My name is Antonio and I am a 19-year-old refugee from Syria. In 2016, amidst the unfolding violence and breakdown of security, I was displaced and forced to flee my home, friends, and close ones in search for a better life, and a better sense of safety. As a refugee I have seen some of the most violent impacts of war and destruction. Fast forward to today, my journey through war and experience as a refugee has inspired a passion in me to make meaningful change that aims to better the lives of people, especially those who are at their lowest. The challenges of receiving what is considered to be basic means in western cultures such as water, electricity, or healthcare are some of my main motivators which drove me to select a career in helping others and ultimately introduced me to nursing. I decided to pursue a career in nursing because I came to see the amount of change which I can make from within. I chose a career in nursing because I believe it provided me with the platform and opportunity to make a difference through caring for people beyond just their immediate physical need but also their emotional and even spiritual need as well. Ultimately, nursing is a career that I found to be both rewarding and fulfilling.
