Rochelle Johnson

TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund Award – Master’s

I developed a passion for healthcare while volunteering at the High River Hospital in the beauty parlor and diagnostic imaging department during high school. It was my family physician who encouraged me to pursue my studies in nursing, and I really developed a passion for it. After graduating with a Bachelor of Nursing, I worked in a variety of settings. These included hemodialysis, long term care (specialized with trach and subacute units) and influenza campaigns.

I am currently working in the hemodialysis department and the cancer clinic. These are both rewarding and challenging departments. I enjoy the variety of skill sets working in various areas. My focus this year will be completing the 2nd year of my Masters of Public Health with Nurse Practitioner Electives Program. Completion of this program will allow me to practice an advanced scope of nursing practice. This will include ordering and interpreting lab tests, diagnostic tests, diagnosing disease, prescribing medications while also focusing on health promotion and illness prevention. From a nursing perspective, primary healthcare will be delivered in a holistic manner. I am always striving to challenge myself and obtain new knowledge and skills. I am thankful for the various mentors, instructors, colleagues and professors who have encouraged me throughout my nursing career. I am also thankful for organizations such as the Canadian Nurses Foundation for supporting continuing education and helping nurses such as myself continue this journey to higher learning.
