Nicole Jarrett

CNSA Parent Award

As a mature student and single parent, choosing to go to university came with many challenges. I felt unfulfilled in my life and decided it was time to find a career where I could make a difference in the lives of the people around me. I am lucky and thankful for the people and organizations that have supported me in my endeavour, as I would not have succeeded without them.

When choosing a career, two criteria were at the top of my list: I wanted to help people and contribute meaningfully to my community. Nursing was a choice that not only met my criteria, but the journey to becoming a nurse has also helped me to grow as a person and discover strengths I did not know I possessed. Additionally, working in healthcare provides job stability and benefits that help me provide for my family. Currently, I work in a surgical unit. However, there are many areas of healthcare to work in, and I look forward to seeing where my career will take me.

I will soon finish my nursing degree and begin my career as a registered nurse. The intensive schooling required to earn my degree has prepared me for entry into practice, but there is still so much to learn; I am eager to continue my education and take part in the many post-entry-level programs offered for nurses so that I may make a difference in the lives of the clients I care for.
