Opeyemi Adeyi

Sawer Sisters Nursing Award

I completed my undergrad Nursing degree at Ladoke Akintola University in Nigeria. Since moving to Canada, I have also completed a post grad diploma in Palliative Care nursing, a master’s degree in Gerontology at the MSVU and currently doing PhD in Nursing at Dalhousie University. I have considerable experience in the community LTC sector as a Clinical Nurse Lead, Manager and Director of Care. I have also volunteered as board member for the Society of Internationally Educated Nurses in America and Dalhousie Graduate Nursing Society among others.

Growing up, I always wanted to be a nurse because I was fascinated by the medical field and dreamed of having a career where I could make a significant impact on people’s lives. Nursing offers the opportunity to change, and possibly even save lives, which I find incredibly fulfilling. Helping people is my passion, and nursing allows me to do this daily. Additionally, nursing provides endless job opportunities and the chance to volunteer in my community.

One memorable moment in my early teens stands out. My grandmother, who suffered from arthritis, told me I was so gentle with her legs that if I ever became a nurse, she would let me be her nurse. It was at that moment a light bulb went off for me; I realized that nursing was my true calling. Becoming a nurse allows me to help people daily, which I find incredibly fulfilling. It also provides endless job opportunities and ways to volunteer in my community, further cementing my desire to be in this profession. Nursing is not just about providing medical care; it’s about making a positive impact on the lives of others, and that’s why I became a nurse.

Giving Tuesday has become a global movement for giving and marks the beginning of the giving season for your favourite causes. Thank you for joining Canadian Nurses Foundation today as we celebrate our 10th annual campaign. Double your gift today!

We know that helping nurses and nursing students is a team effort. More qualified nurses, more nurse-led research, more nurses and nursing students supported with mentoring and proactive mental health programs and training – that’s the outcome of your support. This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses. Let’s make this year’s Giving Tuesday our most impactful yet, proving that our collective kindness can create lasting change.
