CIBC Indigenous Nursing Scholarship
Tansi. My name is Alexis Ross, and my spirit name is Muskrat Medicine Woman. I’m a 25-year-old Cree woman from Gods Lake First Nation (Manitou Sakahigan) on Treaty 5 territory in northern Manitoba. I am proud to be the first in my family to pursue post-secondary education, especially in nursing. This fall, I’ll be entering my fourth year of the Bachelor of Nursing program at the University of Manitoba. My goal is to become a registered nurse and return to the North to give Indigenous peoples the care they rightfully deserve.
Growing up in the North, I witnessed the deep health disparities and systemic challenges faced by Indigenous communities. My own experiences, along with stories shared by family, friends, and my community, deeply shaped my decision to pursue nursing. I was inspired to help close these gaps, advocate for equitable and compassionate care, and bring meaningful change to healthcare, especially in northern remote areas.
I believe patient-centered care begins with truly listening and understanding each person’s story, cultural background, and unique needs. For me, nursing goes beyond clinical skills. It’s about standing alongside those who have been marginalized and creating spaces where everyone feels valued, heard, and respected.
As a future nurse, I am driven by a vision of a healthcare system that is more patient-centered, accessible, and one that honors Indigenous knowledge. By addressing healthcare injustices, I hope to empower clients, support healing, and help build a future where Indigenous peoples can truly thrive in health and spirit.
