Binit Shrestha

John J Vanderlee for Male Nursing Award

I have always had a strong desire to help others, especially during times of vulnerability. This, combined with my passion for biology and medicine, naturally led me to the field of nursing. Besides healthcare, my passions include playing guitar and bass, hiking, and playing and coaching house league soccer.

Volunteering and working at the hospital solidified my passion for nursing. I started off volunteering in the emergency department and later became a virtual visitation representative during the pandemic, helping patients connect with their loved ones when visitors were not allowed. Throughout the pandemic, I also worked as a porter, collaborating closely with nurses in various inpatient and outpatient departments. These experiences allowed me to witness the compassionate care nurses provide in high-pressure situations, inspiring me to pursue a career in this field.

Since 2019, I’ve also worked with a family physician in my community, running a diabetes support group. This experience enabled me to increase health literacy through presentations and create personalized care plans for clients, considering their unique cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This introduction to patient-centered care reinforced my commitment to nursing. Furthermore, leading the Rapid Response Saving Lives (RRSL) project with Punjabi Community Health Services (PCHS) further honed my skills in crisis management, prioritization, and advocacy.

These experiences have equipped me with a deep-seated compassion and a commitment to making a difference in people’s lives, particularly in moments of critical need. I am excited to continue this journey, building on my experiences and skills to provide the best care possible.
