Award Recipient

Danielle Sobers

CNSA 2SLGBTQIA+ Award

My name is Danielle Sobers and I am enrolled in University of Toronto’s accelerated BSc Nursing program, where I am in my second and final year. I am an immigrant from the island of Barbados and I came to Canada as an international student in 2016, subsequently graduating, working as a research technician in a hospital infectious disease laboratory and becoming a permanent resident.

I have always wanted to pursue a healthcare-related role, and even as a child I was fascinated with medical shows and documentaries. I just was not entirely sure in what capacity. I also have had several family members diagnosed with chronic and/or autoimmune conditions; myself most recently. These experiences plus my previous degree and career background reinforced to me that I wanted to work in a more patient-based role rather than lab-based, and so I decided to go back to school.

I applied to this program due to UofT’s renown in keeping up with and developing some of the innovations in the healthcare field, along with its many partnerships and so far I have not been disappointed. I have been exposed to more nursing career options than I initially thought possible through both clinical placements and coursework, in a relatively short timeframe and I have had opportunities to make connections that will take me down the avenues I see myself pursuing; mainly in pediatrics and research.

This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses.
