Award Recipient

Dawn GooGoo

TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund Award

My name is Dawn GooGoo. I am a Mi’kmaq from Waycobah First Nation. I will be entering third year of the Bachelor of Science Nursing program in September at St. Francis Xavier, N.S. I am grateful and honored to receive this award. Nursing has always been a dream of mine, but I had many doubts. After high school I joined the Canadian Forces as a Medic Tech. I loved been a medic. I also loved learning as much as I could during my journey as a medic. Caring for the sick and injured came naturally to me. While I was serving overseas I couldn’t help but think about how much I wanted to fulfill my dream. When I returned I applied and before I knew it, I was sitting in a classroom. I still can’t believe it sometimes. During school I am involved with Aboriginal recruitment. I am also involved with current students. I help them get around the campus, how to get organized and time management. I know leaving home is difficult. I remember when I first left home; it was exciting and painful at the same time. In the past two consecutive years, I have won the Aboriginal peer mentoring award. I hope to see other students succeed in their journey.  Thank you for this award!
