Dennis Respicio

Brenda Jeam IEN Award

My name is Dennis, and I am a nurse passionate about caring and positively impacting people’s lives. My nursing journey began in the Philippines, where I was born and raised. There, I discovered my calling to serve others through the noble nursing profession. However, as life unfolded, I was excited to take my nursing skills and experiences to new heights in Canada, specifically in the beautiful British Columbia (BC) province.

Growing up in the Philippines, I was surrounded by a culture that values the importance of family, community, and compassion. From a young age, I was drawn to positively impacting people’s lives through a career that allowed me to provide care and support to those in need. I witnessed the dedication and selflessness of nurses who worked tirelessly to heal and comfort patients, and it inspired me deeply.

I enrolled in a nursing program in the Philippines with a clear purpose – to be part of the healthcare community that makes a difference in people’s lives during their most vulnerable moments. The nursing curriculum was challenging, but my passion for nursing fueled my determination to excel in my studies and clinical training.

Upon arriving in Canada, I was welcomed by a diverse and inclusive community. My transition to nursing in BC was made smoother by the warm support and guidance of fellow nurses and healthcare professionals. I was embraced by a team that shared my passion for patient-centred care and a commitment to excellence.

Adjusting to the Canadian healthcare system and its unique practices presented some challenges, but I approached each obstacle with an open mind and a willingness to learn. The experiences I gained in the Philippines served as a strong foundation, but I also recognized the importance of adapting to the nuances of nursing in a different country.

One of the most enriching aspects of practicing nursing in Canada, BC, is the exposure to a diverse patient population. The region’s cultural richness has broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of the importance of culturally competent care. I have learned to tailor my approach to meet each patient’s unique needs, fostering an environment of trust and mutual respect.

Additionally, Canada’s healthcare system strongly emphasizes continuing education and professional development. As a nurse in BC, I have been encouraged to pursue advanced certifications and training, allowing me to enhance my skills and stay abreast of the latest advancements in nursing practice.

My journey from being a nurse in the Philippines to practicing nursing in Canada’s BC has been a remarkable and transformative experience. I have flourished as a nurse through my compassionate upbringing in the Philippines and the opportunities and support provided by Canada. My commitment to making a positive impact on people’s lives remains unwavering.

I look forward to continuing my journey as a nurse, embracing each day with compassion, dedication, and a heart that knows no boundaries when caring for others.
