CNSA Clinical Care Award
My name is Ekta Patel, and I’m entering my second year of nursing after degree program at the University of Alberta. As I was completing my Bachelor of Science in immunology and infection, I was uncertain and anxious, thinking about what the future holds, but I was excited to see where my life would take me. I knew I shared a deep passion for healthcare, and after an extensive career research and guidance from my research supervisor, I decided to pursue nursing. As I progressed through my clinical placements, I witnessed how compassionate care impacts patients and their families and the meaningful difference it makes in people’s lives.
I realized that great acts are indeed made up of small deeds. Spending some time with the patients, playing games, feeding them, combing their hair, and lending a listening ear greatly impacts how someone feels. Knowing how the smallest actions of mine touches the patients and families is what keeps me motivated. As a student, I witnessed some of the greatest triumphs and greatest defeats; however, I know that the patients and families will always remember the kindness and compassion I showed, how I cared for them, and how I made them feel. It is incredibly heartwarming and rewarding to create such connections and impacts on people’s lives.
Though nursing is a demanding profession, it provides me an opportunity to test myself and admire the perseverance it brings. As a multi-faceted profession, nursing challenges my curious mind to continually learn, explore, and grow as a student. Every day is a new adventure and a learning opportunity to explore the techniques, procedures, and nursing skills in depth. I constantly find myself drawn to nursing every day because of the diverse opportunities, endless amount of learning, and science that it offers.
Thank you CNF for this incredible opportunity and recognition!
