Emily Bates

CNSA Clinical Award

I have always thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and working collaboratively with others. My training and work experience as a lifeguard over the years have been significant in helping me to discover my passion for overall health and wellness, educating the public, and in discovering how rewarding it is to be able to help others in a time of need.

One year, I broke my dominant hand playing hockey. This personal experience has helped me realize how difficult changes to one’s health can be and the importance of having a good support system. I was no longer able to be as independent as I would like. For example, I would either write an exam left-handed or I would speak the answers aloud and have someone else type. In nursing, I want to help promote patients’ independence as well as assist in creating solutions to the difficulties they may face.

I want to become a nurse because I am passionate about helping, supporting, educating, and lending a listening ear to those in need. During my first year of nursing at UNB, the interactions with residents at my clinical placement in a long-term care facility helped solidify that I have chosen the right career path to pursue. A career in nursing offers a diverse range of job opportunities while allowing me to work with people every day. I also love challenges and nursing is an ever-evolving profession that requires the continuous learning of new practices and skills. Lastly and most importantly, I want to help make a difference in the lives of others.
