Erin McConnell

Bianca Beyer Award

My journey to becoming a nurse started when I was completing my Bachelor of Science in Biology and contemplating my future profession. I knew I wanted a challenging and constantly evolving career where I could make a positive difference in others’ lives. Nursing is both a science and an art and offers endless choices in career paths. The more I learned about what a career in nursing would look like, the more I realized it aligned with my goals.

Two years later, in Fall 2018, I graduated from Dalhousie School of Nursing. Since graduation, I have primarily worked as a bedside nurse and research coordinator in adult nephrology and transplant. It is a privilege to support patients and their families through challenging times. My experiences in research encouraged me to apply for graduate studies. In Fall 2022, I returned to Dalhousie to start the Master of Science in Nursing program and most recently was accepted to the Ph.D. in Nursing program to begin Fall 2023. My research interests include renal care, transitions in care settings, and knowledge translation.

Pursuing my Ph.D. in Nursing will allow me to make a difference in patient care and the nursing profession through clinical care, education, and research. I am incredibly grateful to have received the 2023 Bianca Beyer Award to support my graduate studies.

We know that helping nurses and nursing students is a team effort. More qualified nurses, more nurse-led research, more nurses and nursing students supported with mentoring and proactive mental health programs and training – that’s the outcome of your support. This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses. Let’s make this year’s Giving Tuesday our most impactful yet, proving that our collective kindness can create lasting change.
