Ethan Burgess

John J Vanderlee Male Nursing Award

I lived a quiet and shy childhood, more comfortable observing than speaking, and often keeping to myself. But over the years, through volunteering and new experiences, I quickly began to value the human connection. Supporting individuals at special needs camps in the summer, helping out with Indigenous outreach programs, and working with individuals whether tutoring and or coaching sports teams showed me how meaningful it is to connect with people. I began to discover a genuine love for listening to others’ stories, offering support, and simply being present. These moments helped me grow into someone who finds joy and purpose in caring for others, and they sparked my journey toward becoming a nurse.

I have always been a hands-on learner and someone who thrives in fast-paced environments. Working as a nursing assist in an operating room, I got to witness firsthand the impact nurses make each day. I admired their ability to balance knowledge with heart. It felt natural to follow that path. I have also coached basketball and soccer, participated in Special Olympics, and stepped into leadership roles as a student nurse, each of these experiences shaped my confidence, empathy, and desire to support others in meaningful ways.

I wanted to pursue nursing because I believe in making a difference. Whether I am offering a listening ear, providing physical care, or advocating for someone’s needs, I feel a deep sense of purpose and pride through nursing.

This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses.
