Award Recipient

Lisa Ann Elizabeth Fedoriw

TD Aboriginal Nursing Fund Award – Baccalaureate

My name is Lisa Fedoriw and I am an Indigenous student at the University of Victoria University enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing Program and will graduate in 2020.

I am a mature student who has come back to school to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. Out of high school, I attended University and achieved my Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Biology and Psychology. I always had an interest in the medical field. After completion of University I met my husband and we moved out of province and settled down and had kids. I was so busy with our children I never had the time to think about what I wanted in my life. As they got older, they became involved in the school and community activities, I volunteered a lot of my time at the school helping with reading groups in elementary and coaching sports in our community.

Upon moving to Vancouver Island I wanted to do something for myself that I have always dreamed of. This was the year of “no regrets” and I applied to the nursing program at Camosun College. I have never been able to say I have found my “calling” until now. I am thankful every day to be a part of this faculty and feel blessed to be helping others every time I am with patients. It is important to me that patients feel they are important and cared for. I make sure to take the time to have conversations and get to know who I am working with. Relationships are important to me and they help to reduce a patient’s anxiety of being in a hospital setting as well. I am currently going into my fourth year and I am so excited what the future holds. I am hoping to work in a public health setting with at risk families. I also find myself drawn to mental health nursing.

I am incredibly thankful for the Indspire sponsor who has help me to reach my goal in becoming a nurse to help others. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
