Helen McCord

CNF Pediatrics Research Award

I have always been drawn to helping and caring for people, and that’s what led me to become a nurse. From a young age, I knew I wanted a career where I could make a real difference, offering both comfort and skilled care when people need it most. Nursing felt like the right path because it combines compassion with science and allows me to keep learning and growing throughout my career.

My mother was also a nurse, and I grew up seeing how meaningful her work was. Watching her care for others gave me a deep respect for the profession and showed me how powerful it can be to make a difference in someone’s life.

Over time, I found my place in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, caring for premature and critically ill babies. It is challenging work, but also incredibly rewarding. Every day, I am inspired by the strength of these tiny patients and the resilience of their families. My role is not only to care for the infants, but also to support parents during moments of uncertainty, to listen when they are scared, and to celebrate even the smallest milestones together.

I became a nurse because I wanted to help people, but nursing has given me so much more — purpose, perspective, and the privilege of being trusted with life’s most important moments. I feel honored every day to walk alongside families and to make a difference when it matters most.

This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses.
