My mum was a nurse, so I think it was hardwired into my genes. She has always been my greatest inspiration. Before scrubs were the standard nursing uniform, my mum wore white dresses and pantyhose to work. When I was a little girl, I would dress up in my own white dress and pantyhose to pretend I was going to the hospital for my night shift as well. We would get ready for “work” together, get in the car and she would drive me to my shift at the large rock halfway down the driveway. I was quite accustomed to shift work when I began my nursing career. Thankfully, when I started nursing we could wear scrub pants!

I wanted to become a nurse so that I could come home at the end of my day and feel like I made a difference, even a small one. I first obtained my Practical Nursing Diploma in 2014, but I knew I wanted to return for my degree, which I have just completed. I have just graduated with distinction with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) this past June 2023. One huge accomplishment was that my entire four years of my degree was 100% funded by scholarships/bursaries It is thanks to organizations like this that make returning to school possible. Thank you for this opportunity.

We know that helping nurses and nursing students is a team effort. More qualified nurses, more nurse-led research, more nurses and nursing students supported with mentoring and proactive mental health programs and training – that’s the outcome of your support. This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses. Let’s make this year’s Giving Tuesday our most impactful yet, proving that our collective kindness can create lasting change.
