Frances Mary Stoddart Award
My name is Jenny (Gahyang), and I am a student entering my final year of nursing school at the University of British Columbia. I am very honored to be the recipient of the Frances Mary Stoddart Award from the Canadian Nurses Foundation this year.
My family immigrated to Canada from South Korea when I was 11 years old. About a year after our arrival, my younger brother suffered a stroke while playing soccer. He was rushed to the hospital and had to undergo major brain surgery. Thanks to the expertise, knowledge, and prompt response of the doctors and nurses at the University of Alberta Hospital, my brother survived. My family was deeply grateful for their dedication and hard work in saving his life. Additionally, I was inspired by the kindness and care that the medical team at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital showed my brother during his time there. This experience had a profound impact on my life. Since then, I have aspired to become a healthcare professional who can provide the same compassion and support to others facing illness and hardship.
I am very grateful to be able to work as a nurse and help people. My goal is to become a skilled and knowledgeable nurse who is dedicated to providing excellent patient care and making a positive impact on the lives of my patients. This award has not only relieved some of my financial burden but has also encouraged me to work harder in my studies. I hope to give back by becoming a nurse who can help others during some of their toughest moments in life. I look forward to working with other healthcare professionals to provide the best possible care for my patients.
I would like to express my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the donors of the Frances Mary Stoddart Award and the staff at the Canadian Nurses Foundation for supporting my nursing school journey.
