From a young age, I have embraced the belief that the impossible can become possible
through determination and a steadfast commitment to my dreams. As a child, I would jot down
ambitious goals on a to-do list and carry them with me everywhere, determined to turn those
dreams into reality. Even as an adult, I still encounter subtle skepticism, but I remain steadfast in
pursuing my aspirations. My name is Juliet Nwaiwu, and I am a third-year Nursing after-degree
student at the University of Alberta. My journey has been one of unwavering determination,
perseverance, and self-discovery, fueled by a desire to make a meaningful impact on people’s
lives.
Originally hailing from Nigeria, I embarked on a life-changing journey to Canada in 2018
to reunite with my husband after living apart for an extended period. My first degree was in
Petroleum Engineering, and I dedicated six years of my life to that field before my heart yearned
for something different. I craved a career that would grant me greater flexibility and allow me to
prioritize spending valuable time with my family.
It was a personal experience that served as the catalyst for my decision to pursue a career
in Nursing. When I underwent a major surgery and found myself in the care of compassionate
and skilled nurses, I was deeply moved by the quality of care I received. Their dedication and
attentiveness made me feel valued as a patient, and I was provided with every tool necessary for
a speedy recovery. That encounter ignited an unwavering passion within me—a desire to give
back and provide the same exceptional care to others in need. As a Nursing student, I have
accumulated invaluable clinical practicum experience, and some research experiences which
have been instrumental in developing my nursing skills and honing my ability to deliver
compassionate care, and I eagerly anticipate the future impact I will have as a dedicated and
compassionate nurse.
