Dr. Helen Preston Glass Award
My commitment to social justice and turning advocacy into action is what led me to the nursing
profession. Inspired by my experiences in Kenya and Guatemala, I became determined to build a
future where I could make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. As a Registered Nurse, I
have worked collaboratively to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and
communities. Although my career began in clinical practice, my nursing journey has also led me
to nursing education and research – experiences that have shaped my personal and professional
growth in unimaginable ways.
As a PhD in Nursing student at Dalhousie University, I am committed to working collaboratively
with patients and healthcare providers to improve health equity. My doctoral research explores
the implementation of a patient-activated discharge communication tool in emergency
departments. By empowering patients as active participants in their care, this tool aims to
enhance health outcomes by ensuring patients leave the emergency department with the
information they need for successful at-home care. I hope this research will contribute to
improved patient outcomes, enhanced nursing care, and reduced strain on the healthcare system.
I am incredibly grateful to have been selected as a recipient of the 2025 Canadian Nurses
Foundation Dr. Helen Preston Glass Award. Dr. Glass was instrumental in the growth of the
nursing profession, making numerous contributions to nursing education and research. I am truly
inspired by her accomplishments and motivated to enhance nursing education and research
throughout my career.
