Erin Hogg Northern Nursing Award
I am Wet’suwet’en and I belong to the Laksilyu clan of Tsee K’al K’e Yex; however, I was born and raised in Prince George by my single mother and older sister. I have always known that I wanted a career in the health care field, but I was unsure of what I wanted to do. So, I started my post-secondary education in the Bachelor of Health Science program majoring in Biomedical Studies at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). During my second year of this program, I started to question what I wanted and what career would align with my values and goals. I wanted a career that would allow me to help and support others and make meaningful and respectful relationships through all stages of life. I found that nursing could provide me with these aspirations, so I applied to the new accelerated nursing program at UNBC. I can confidently say that this was the best decision I have made, as my passion for nursing continues to grow each day.
I will be entering my final year. After I graduate, I will be working towards of my goal of working in acute and/or emergency care in rural and remote areas of Northern BC. Northern BC has a large population of Indigenous peoples, which is the primary reason of why I want to stay in Northern BC. I want to give gratitude to the Canadian Nurses Foundation and its donors for helping me with my education and reaching my goal.
