Kylee Conroy

Johnson & Johnson Award

My name is Kylee Conroy. I am 20 years old and am in my fourth year of the Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing program. I am from Cranbrook, British Columbia, and am attending the University of Victoria in partnership with College of the Rockies. Initially I decided to go into nursing because I have always had a passion for biology and recognized that nursing would foster life-long learning. When I applied to nursing school, I did not truly understand what nurses did. In high school nursing stood out to me because there are so many different career opportunities, and it can open many different doors. Now that I am in my fourth year of nursing school, I feel I have discovered new reasons for wanting to be a nurse. Nursing is so much more than biology and science; it involves a great deal of compassion and advocacy for patients. Nursing school has already changed the way I look at others and has given me a new perspective on how to live life. I want to be a nurse because I know it will keep me humble, it will push me to grow mentally, and it will give me the opportunity to help those that need it most. I want to be a support for people that need it because I understand that not everyone is given the same opportunities. So, I may have decided to become a nurse because I thought it would be interesting, but I have learned it is so much more than that and is something that will give me a purpose.
