Morayo Aladejana

CNSA Community Involvement Award

My journey towards becoming a nurse stems from a deep-seated commitment to holistic patient care and a passion for social advocacy, research, and continuous learning. This dedication is driven by my aspiration to excel as a Registered Nurse (RN) and ultimately as a Nurse Practitioner (NP).

The seed of my interest in nursing was planted when I witnessed the compassionate care an RN provided to my father during a sickle-cell crisis. This experience profoundly influenced me, leading me to pursue roles as a clinical support assistant at Royal Victoria Hospital and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. My contributions to the Patient Experience Office at Sunnybrook Hospital and diverse nursing placements at CAMH, Sunnybrook, and Holland Bloorview further entrenched my commitment to the profession. These roles exposed me to the complexities of nursing, especially during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and allowed me to develop critical skills in patient support, compassion, and clinical practice.

A particularly poignant experience at Royal Victoria Hospital, where I provided comfort and companionship to an elderly patient with dementia in an understaffed emergency department, solidified my resolve to pursue nursing. This moment underscored the importance of adaptability and holistic care, addressing not just physical but also mental and social needs.

Additionally, my involvement in assisting individuals with disabilities, serving as President of the Canadian Black Nurses Alliance at UofT, and competing as a Track/Field athlete for Toronto Metropolitan University, has honed my communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. My academic background in Biomedical Science at TMU, participation in the BScN program at UofT, and research expertise further equip me with the knowledge and critical thinking abilities necessary for a successful nursing career.

These experiences and skills collectively prepare me for a fulfilling career as an RN and future NP, with a focus on leadership, management, and holistic patient care.
