Tylenol Canada Bursary Program Award
Truthfully, I never envisioned myself as a nurse. After I immigrated to Canada a decade ago, I decided to become a nurse largely based on others’ opinions — that being a nurse is very rewarding. So, I went into nursing in pursuit of myself with the hopes of fulfillment. Little did I know that I was about to be transformed. From my undergraduate program to my current Masters program, I have come to experience the power and impact of being a nurse. Nursing has become more than a job for me; nursing is now a passion and a pathway to lifelong learning and growth.
As a nurse, I consider it an honour to meaningfully contribute to individuals’ lives during their most vulnerable moments in the emergency department. It is a privilege to be that person who can provide comfort, reassurance, laughter, a cup of water, and even directions to the hospital cafeteria. Teaching and helping people are integral to who I am, and being a nurse has allowed me to embrace both in the most fulfilling way. With nursing, I am always challenged to improve personally and professionally. I am motivated to be part of a larger movement that advocates for the healing and health improvement of individuals and communities. Nursing has shown me the true meaning of social justice — at the bedside with patients and their families, within interprofessional teams, and in the community.
Nursing chose me, and I am here to stay.
