TYLENOL® Fund to Advance Diversity in Nursing and Health Equity Research
My journey as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student at Selkirk College in Castlegar, BC, has been shaped by both personal and professional experiences. Raised in Canmore, AB, I discovered my passion for healthcare later in life after a lengthy career in hospitality and world travel. This passion led me to a decade-long tenure as a Registered Veterinary Technologist, where I developed my clinical skills and deepened my compassion and sense of responsibility for all living beings.
Like many, my life took a significant turn in 2020. Balancing pregnancy and first-time parenthood during the pandemic highlighted the critical need for accessible healthcare and social supports in rural communities. This realization, coupled with my need for human connection and dedication to community well-being, inspired me to transition to the BSN program.
My path has not been without obstacles. I have been managing the lasting effects of two traumatic brain injuries, resulting in post-concussion syndrome and chronic fatigue. These invisible conditions have impacted my daily life, challenging my concentration, energy levels, and overall well-being. Despite these hurdles, I have remained committed to my educational and professional goals, adapting my strategies to excel in my studies and caregiving roles.
Overall, these experiences have deepened my understanding of the healthcare system and strengthened my resolve to address regional disparities. Receiving the Tylenol® Fund to Advance Diversity in Nursing and Health Equity Research Scholarship is not just a financial support; it is a catalyst for my academic and professional growth. This recognition reaffirms my commitment to my studies and the evolution of my nursing practice, enabling me to bring compassionate, equitable healthcare to underserved communities.
