Rose Plantus

CNSA Impact Award

I have committed to nursing by pursuing a well-rounded approach to the profession: working part time at the bedside in the emergency department with high acuity cases, completing research about emerging topics related to social equity, and participating in opportunities to lead and develop peers in clinical and academic settings.

My current research projects revolve around the development of equitable care for vulnerable populations and increasing student awareness of poverty recognition by integrating service-based learning, thus enhancing emotional intelligence. I have given back to the community by coordinating collections for Street Angels, integrating support from professional organizations such as the local chapter of the RNAO and working with a local Shelter to improve their clients access to trauma informed care during crisis intervention.

In February 2024 I presented research about the local Shelter Health network at the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing in Calgary, AB. In May, attended Queens Park with the RNAO to speak with politicians about staffing shortages, safe consumption sites, equity, diversity and inclusion. As I continue to balance clinical research through continuing education, working bedside in critical care nursing, and attend patient advocacy events, I do not lose sight of why I have pursued this career, my family.

I believe in social justice, and I remind my patients “you do not get to choose where you came from, but you get to decide where you go from here.”

We know that helping nurses and nursing students is a team effort. More qualified nurses, more nurse-led research, more nurses and nursing students supported with mentoring and proactive mental health programs and training – that’s the outcome of your support. This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses. Let’s make this year’s Giving Tuesday our most impactful yet, proving that our collective kindness can create lasting change.
