Sarah Pirani

Tylenol Canada Bursary Program Award

My journey into nursing began with a deep desire to serve and advocate for others. I initially trained and practiced as a physician in China, but when I immigrated to Canada, I made the decision to career transition to nursing. This path allowed me to blend my clinical knowledge with a holistic, patient-centered approach to care. I was drawn to the core values of nursing—compassion, advocacy, and relationship-building—which have guided me throughout my career.

Since becoming a Nurse Practitioner in 2014, I have dedicated myself to both clinical practice and academic teaching. Since 2021, I have been working at an urgent primary care clinic in Victoria, BC, providing longitudinal primary care to patients across the lifespan, many of whom face complex social and medical challenges. I also serve as an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Victoria, where I help train the next generation of NPs. Teaching has become a profound source of meaning for me—I see it as a way to extend the impact of nursing beyond individual patient encounters.

Pursuing a PhD in Nursing allows me to gain additional research skills. My research focuses on diagnostic reasoning in NP education—an area that bridges my interests in clinical excellence, education, and health equity. Receiving this scholarship from the Canadian Nurses Foundation is both an honour and a source of motivation. It affirms my path and strengthens my commitment to advancing nursing practice, education, and leadership in Canada.

We know that helping nurses and nursing students is a team effort. More qualified nurses, more nurse-led research, more nurses and nursing students supported with mentoring and proactive mental health programs and training – that’s the outcome of your support. This leads to a stronger, more robust healthcare system for Canada.

Your support today, on Giving Tuesday, empowers us to set ambitious goals, strengthen our resources, and show that our collective generosity fuels the next generation of nurses.
